These were introduced over 100 years ago during steel shortages and can still be seen weaving through the Tasmanian wilderness today. The wooden planks are shaped and held together by steel bands. When water fills the pipe, the timber absorbs it and swells which forces the wood planks tightly together, creating a seal that prevents the water from leaking out under pressure.
